A Clear Path…
The cloudy days of winter remind us of how much easier it is to see in the light of day. Whether you’re traveling by foot, boat, train or car – when the visibility is clear – the journey is so much easier.
The same is true in our spiritual life. When our life is cloudy and dark, it is not only difficult to feel the presence of God, it is difficult to handle our relationships:
7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. 1 John 2;7-11 (KJV)
From the beginning of time, the God who is love, wanted us to express love one to another. That love for God was challenged in the garden, and then later with two brothers, Cain and Abel. From that point on there have been strivings and contentions that caused God to intervene with separations, even for some extinction.
Yet the old commandment was the same as the new commandment – the only difference is that the true light has come. When we receive the true light of the world in our heart, it embraces love itself. We will not stumble or falter in our dealings with each other because the brilliance of that light keeps us on a clear path. When that light is missing, or sin darkens that light within us, then we begin to stumble again because the darkness has blinded our eyes.
I hear the lyrics of an old song:
...Walk in the light (we’re walk in the light)
Beautiful light (well it’s a beautiful light)
Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright
Oh Lord, shine all around us by day and by night
Oh Lord, Jesus is the light of the world…
