A Word to the Wise!
There was a time when men relished wisdom. Unfortunately in the post-modern culture or “no culture” movement of today, wisdom is said to be whatever you feel to be true. I still choose to believe that there are truth-seekers who desire to not only know the truth, but want to walk in the truth. This is for you!
An understanding person demonstrates patience, for mercy means holding your tongue. When you are insulted, be quick to forgive and forget it, for you are virtuous when you overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11 (TPT)
Solomon left us a treasury of wisdom. It would do well to read a proverb daily just like you take your vitamins; vitamins strengthen your body, proverbs strengthen your soul. I chose this one on offense because not only is this one of the leading causes of broken relationships, it is also one of the leading causes of broken health! Offense, left unchecked can kill you! The above scripture tells us that overlooking an offense is a virtue. Yet there is much more about offense that is a benefit:
If you shrug off an insult and refuse to take offense, you demonstrate discretion indeed. But the fool has a short fuse and will immediately let you know when he’s offended. Proverbs 12:16 (TPT)
And how about this, for all of you lovebirds out there:
Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense. 1 Corinthians 13:5 (TPT)
Finally, for all of you Bible scholars who purport to know God’s revealed Word:
9 I continue to pray for your love to grow and increase beyond measure, bringing you into the rich revelation of spiritual insight in all things.
10 This will enable you to choose the most excellent way of all—becoming pure and without offense until the unveiling of Christ. Philippians 1:9-10 (TPT)
There is no doubt that from a practical and health standpoint, to becoming a living, breathing disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, one thing that we must rid ourselves of is – offense. It is not always easy, but it essential to walking this walk. Wisdom dictates this.
