Asking Some Questions…
There are two days celebrated in Christendom more than any others: Resurrection Sunday (Easter) and Christmas. Just why they are celebrated was once known to all the world. Sadly in this age, there are probably a great number of people who question their significance.
Both of these days focus on a person, and that person is the reason that there is Christianity. That person is the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who believed on His Name, or believers, came to be called Christians in the first century AD:
25 And Barnabas left for Tarsus to search for Saul; 26 and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. For an entire year they met [with others] in the church and instructed large numbers; and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. Acts11:25-26 (AMP)
As the church of believers began to be established throughout the world, in order to distinguish those believers they took on the Name of Him who they believed. Though this establishes the “Who”, it does not tell the “Why”. This week, known in Christendom as Holy Week or Passion Week, we will look at the “why” and some other questions.
What was it about Jesus that made His Name either hated or revered? Who was this Man? What made Him different? If HIs claim was true that He was the Son of God sent from heaven to earth, then why did He come to earth? How did HIs life differ from anyone else? Where is all this leading? Getting back to what, what is the point?
The story begins at the first record of human history that tells us about God. The story begins in Genesis 1 and tells us about the earth’s creation. It tells us also about the creation of man (Genesis 2). It’s not long in the story before we find man in a confrontation with a serpent (Genesis 3:1-7). This crafty serpent tricked Adam and Eve into disobeying the one thing God told them NOT TO DO! With this disobedience sin entered into the world. The holiness of God caused man to become separated from God, and in order to make restitution for that sin and to regain fellowship with God, man needed a Savior.
In Genesis 3:15 God promised that Savior – that Savior was HIs Son, HIs only Son – that Savior was Jesus.
