Get To Know What Kind of Wind It Is!
Over the past several weeks, there have been devastating hurricanes, winds, and rain in parts of our country. Each of these elements are sometimes listed as a natural disaster. Why would the natural things God made be labeled a disaster? Because a simple thing like a spring breeze can also be a torrential force uprooting trees and even buildings. We have to know that the wind has various distinctions, some a force for good like moving windmills for power, and some a force for evil, like tornadoes and hurricanes.
What we have to do is to be able to distinguish what kind of wind it is. Consider this passage of scripture from 1 Kings 19:11-12 (NKJV)
11 And He said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord." And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
Just as God speaks to us through various means, so He speaks through creation. We have to learn to distinguish whether it is Him that is speaking, and just what He is saying. For example, in Mark the fourth chapter Jesus’ disciples were terrified by the storm that had come upon them. After awaking Jesus, they asked if He cared that they perished. Immediately Jesus:
"…. arose, and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea, "Peace, be still." And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
The devastating winds came from the evil one, but Jesus who is Lord of all is Lord over the elements and has all power over the enemy. He spoke, and immediately the wind ceased. We have been given that kind of authority, to speak to the destructive winds in our life and declare that "peace be still". While there are times when God allows the winds to shake us and get our attention, we must know that often the enemy wants to wreak havoc in our lives and will cause winds of turmoil to torment us. God could have spoke to the prophet Elijah in the wind, he could have spoke to him in an earthquake; instead He chose a still small voice. Most of the time that is the kind of wind that God brings to us, we have to know the difference in the wind.
