Lest We Forget!
Those of us that are aging often get blamed for forgetting things, and admittedly sometimes that occurs. However, it is human nature to forget those things that are not placed before us on a regular basis. We can be ever so enamored by our experience with God in a certain situation; however, it loses its’ potency unless we keep it before us. Deuteronomy 4 gives the Israelites a strong warning:
8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons; Deut. 4:5-5 (KJV)
In this passage the Lord speaks through Moses to His people asking them if they know of nation that has laws and statues as righteous as the laws that were given to them? Following this is a warning, a strong warning to "keep thy soul diligently" – and "not to forget the things thine eyes have seen".
Our Father not only made us, He knows our frame and what it is capable of and prone to do at every stage of our life. This passage directs the parents to teach not only their sons, but their sons’ sons.
God knew that not only would the individual themselves need to reminded of their great deliverance form oppression, but there was a need to perpetuate this teaching into the second and third generation.
This is as true today as it was in the days of Moses. We need to "take heed" and rehearse our deliverance from sin and shame to remember the glorious rescue we had. We need to tell our children and grand-children of the marvelous works of our Father, and not give up until they have that experience too!.
