Songs in the Night
When I was in my chlld bearing stage of life there were many nights when I was up with the babies. I would listen to the radio in my room as I would try to get them back to sleep. There was one program on the air called, “Songs in the Night”. I loved that program because it would always spur me to listen to what God was saying to me during those long nights.
I was so excited one day when I saw that this night season was depicted in the Bible:
My choice is you, God, first and only.
And now I find I’m your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard.
And then you made me your heir!
7-8 The wise counsel God gives when I’m awake
is confirmed by my sleeping heart.
Day and night I’ll stick with God;
I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go. Psalm 16:6-8 (MSG)
I love this version by Eugene Peterson in the Message for it says exactly what God did for me, and does for so many, He “set me up with a house and. yard, and made me His Heir”. Thank you Lord! But He didn’t stop there, He also spoke truth and remedy for any number of things, during the day; and He would confirm it in the night seasons. Day and night He reminds me of who He is, who He wants me to be, and what HE desires to all who will come to HIm.
What a privilege to be in the family! What a privilege to even spend quiet time with Him, even if it is int he night season rocking a baby to sleep. So many times we look at things from a negative point of view because it is not convenient. It was not my greatest desire to stay up night after night with a crying baby. Yet, when I look. back on those days, they were some of the most precious days of my life. Not only did I have more time to bond with my little baby, but I had more time to bond with my God. HE would speak to me during those night seasons and so much that I was able to accomplish more in the day was because of the instruction I received at night.
Are you presently on the back side of the mountain, wondering if you will ever find a way to return; take comfort, God does not waste any of our time, God wants to commune with you. Even as Eli told young Samuel, the next time you find yourself in a tight squeeze, not of your own making, or hear voices calling you by name, say “speak Lord…your servant hears.”
