The Reward for Obedience…
One of my favorite stories in the Old Testament is concerning the midwives in Exodus the first chapter:
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; they’re vigorous. Before the midwife can get there, they’ve already had the baby.”
20-21 God was pleased with the midwives. The people continued to increase in number—a very strong people. And because the midwives honored God, God gave them families of their own. Exodus 1:19-20 (MSG)
Pharaoh had ordered all of the midwives to kill the male Hebrew babies born in Egypt because they were multiplying so fast. The midwives feared God and they determined that they would not do it. However when they were questioned by Pharaoh they had a quick answer, that the Hebrew women gave birth too quickly for them to interfere with the birth.
So many scenarios could have followed, they could have been killed, they could’ve had their services revoked- (likened to have your license revoked). Yet, this didn’t happen. God gave them tremendous favor, and not only were they able to continue in their field, but God gave them families of their own!
As a result of their quick wit and let’s face it- the anointing of God- they were able to save many Hebrew male babies, among them a most notable one – Moses!
It is no different today. When we obey God there is always a reward – wait on it!
