There Is Only One Debt We Should Have!

In a world that is in debt to the hilt with any and everyone, scripture tells us there is one debt we should have:

Don’t run up debts, except for the huge debt of love you owe each other. When you love others, you complete what the law has been after all along. The law code—don’t sleep with another person’s spouse, don’t take someone’s life, don’t take what isn’t yours, don’t always be wanting what you don’t have, and any other "don’t" you can think of—finally adds up to this: Love other people as well as you do yourself. You can’t go wrong when you love others. When you add up everything in the law code, the sum total is love. Romans 13:8 (MSG)

Cut up your credit cards and live within your means is a good rule of thumb. However, when it comes to "love", we never have enough, it’s something we have to go in debt for. As you can see from the text above, love includes a lot of don’ts and as human beings we are bent on things we "do".

We feel compelled to accomplish, to acquire, to attain. In these strivings the temptation is always there to get it by any means necessary. There are also those times when we have worked so hard to "get" or to "be", making so many sacrifices, that we somehow feel that we deserve things that we "want" – even if they are not rightfully ours. This is where we might have to borrow from a love tank that never runs dry. In and of ourselves, our love tank may register "E" – life may just drain us of all the love we can muster up. There is someone that we can borrow from – to pay the debt we owe our neighbors; a debt that you may think they do not even deserve. Yet, paying out "love" to our neighbors is not just for them – ultimately, it is for us, for paying out love fulfills the law code we have been commanded to follow. As the scripture says above, "the sum total (of the law code) is love". We never have an excuse of there not being enough, for the love tank we can draw from is love itself:

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God.

He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love. 1 John 4:7 &8 (KJV)
