VIGILANT!
Be sober, be vigilant
The devil is always on the prowl – looking for an opening to do damage to people. He does not just attack Christians, he goes after everyone. Peter offers us a defense, to "be sober, (and) be vigilant". Looking at the definitions of these words:
sober – marked by sedate or gravely or earnestly thoughtful character or demeanor
vigilant -alertly watchful especially to avoid danger (Merriam Webster Dictionary)
The Father knows that in order to defeat the enemy of our soul we have to be intentionally alert, purposely aware of the potential of danger, and exhibiting a character that can quickly respond to changing circumstances.
We, as the people of God, must be the first partakers of living this kind of life. Indulging in behaviors and substances that hinder our prayer life and our walk must be avoided at all times. Verse 9-1 in 1 Peter 5 lets us know we neither suffer alone nor suffer without help – be vigilant!
You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, he does. (MSG)
