There are fundamental truths about God that most of us will only scratch the surface on. Bible scholars spend years, even a lifetime trying to undercover all the truth in the Bible and yet they too fall short. There are however some precepts that will guide us along our journey, no matter what our level of competence:
God, teach me lessons for living
so I can stay the course.
Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—
my whole life one long, obedient response.
Guide me down the road of your commandments;
I love traveling this freeway!
Give me an appetite for your words of wisdom,
and not for piling up loot.
Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets,
invigorate me on the pilgrim way.
Affirm your promises to me—
promises made to all who fear you. Psalm 119: 33-39 (MSG)
This right here, this passage is a prayer to God that can guide us all the days of our life. For only He can help us stay the course, only He can help us to walk in obedience, understanding the importance of His commandments. Only as we seek God for more of His Spirit will our appetite for walking in godliness grow. Only as we find His riches greater than the riches of this world will we grasp the width, and the depth, and the breadth of His love for us.
There is a benefit to this pursuit. When we get in the place where we reverence the Lord we understand we can draw upon His promises. And His promises are all good and very good!
