A Gift to the World!
There are some people whose talents and abilities not only benefit themselves, or their places of employment, but they also benefit the entire world. One small, inconspicuous woman named Katherine Johnson was one such woman. she quietly left this life today at the age of 101.
Katherine Coleman’s parents noticed her exceptional ability at math as a child. Recognizing that she was not able to get the kind of education that she needed in Jim Crow South at , traditional schools, they took her to the Institute a school on the campus of West Virginia State College. Excelling in her studies she graduated from college at 18. She was offered no exceptional opportunities then, but had to begin her career as a teacher, one of the few professional opportunities for African Americans in the south. However, some years later she learned of NASA hiring mathematicians, where she worked for 35 years. One of the most notable of her accomplishments there was doing the mathematical calculations for John. Glenn for his monumental trip to the moon!
Katherine Coleman Johnson and her fellow African American female counterparts became infamous with the movie entitled "Hidden Figures" which portrayed their spectacular accomplishments at NASA.
There are hundreds if not thousands of Katherine Johnsons whose notable achievements never make them household names in spite or how valuable those achievements are. However, we hold fast to this word from the Psalmist:
This I know:
the favor that brings promotion and power
doesn’t come from anywhere on earth,
for no one exalts a person but God, the true judge of all.
He alone determines where favor rests.
He anoints one for greatness
and brings another down to his knees. Psalm 75:6-7 (TPT)
While the press may never make someone a household name – this Psalm rings true – God will bless those whose work is committed to Him and He will allow it to accomplish that which He. purposes.
