Memories…

Memories in its’ simplest form is the recall or recollection of a particular act or event.  Memories can be good, and memories can be bad. This morning I came across a quote which prompted this writing:

"When your memories are bigger than your dreams, then you headed to the grave." (Author Unknown)

I applied this to my own life, where am I on this spectrum? Then, looking at the following scripture, it provoked further thought:

This is why I couldn’t stand it anymore and sent Timothy to report on the state of your faith: because I was worried the tempter had tested you and, if so, all of our hard work would have come to nothing.

6 You can imagine my relief and joy when Timothy returned to us with such good news about you, about your faith and love for us, about how you have such good memories of us and long to see us as much as we long to see you. 7 Hearing this about your faith, brothers and sisters, brought comfort to us in our stress-filled days of trouble and suffering.1 Thessalonians 3:5-7(The Voice)

Memories of good days can often trigger concern in a troubled parent who hasn’t heard from their child. What has caused the change in their correspondence? In the above scripture the Apostle Paul was concerned about this church that he had "parented". How relieved he was when Timothy brought back a wonderful report of both their status and the joy they had in maintaining memories of Paul’s time with them. Paul was not only relieved, he was comforted.

In this instance, both Paul and the Thessalonians had memories, good memories, yet the effect of those memories initially brought great concern to Paul; yet, when he heard of those same memories being treasured by the Thessalonians – it brought him joy. In our lives, we can take look at our memories through different filters, depending upon where our heart is. That is why we should always remember:

Moses: So watch what you do! Be careful with your very life! Don’t forget the things you saw with your own eyes, and don’t let them fade from your memory. Remember them your whole life; teach them to your children and your grandchildren. Deuteronomy 4:9 (The Voice)
