Quit Playing the Field, Stick With The One!

While the one who plays the field may be likable, they are not respected. Charm may entertain for a moment or two, but when we are looking for friends we want people who are true to their word. When employer are looking for an employee, they want someone to work for them who will give allegiance to their company alone. Certainly, when one chooses a mate, they don’t enter in to the marriage being okay with  a philanderer. Our holy God wants no less from us:

So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you‘ll get on your feet. James 4:7-10 (MSG)

Why we feel as if God should be alright with our "playing the field" – choosing one kind of life today and another tomorrow, and only coming by and visiting Him when we are in trouble is a mind blowing thing. And yet, most of us live that way, whether consciously or not.

Saying "YES" to God is not a one-time event. It opens the door to a relationship that in order to maximize the benefits of that relationship, we must be faithful to it. We cannot decide that God is alright with our philandering with the things of this world. it is time for us to get serious about what it means to be a true and faithful friend. It starts with a decision, it continues with a conversation, it only lasts if we turn away from our enticing lovers and  give Him our all.
