The Best Advice a Father Can Give His Son!

This week-end a father that I know suddenly passed from this life into the next. I knew him to be a godly man and father, who I am sure imparted godly wisdom to his children. Contemplating on how unpredictable life is, it is essential that we deposit the kind of truth to our children that will enable them to navigate through this life. David, the shepherd king of Israel had experienced a great many things during his lifetime. As he approached his final days, he spoke to his son who was to succeed him:

2 "I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. 3 Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. 1 Kings 2:2-3 (NLT)

Of all the things that David no doubt shared with his son (some are stated in the book of Proverbs), there is no more important truth than that stated above. Every father who comes to know God, comes to know himself. Identity issues stem from being disconnected with our Creator. When we align ourselves rightly with God, truth begins to flow in us, opening doors of light and understanding. As we unravel the mysteries of life we want above everything else to share what we learn with those we love the most.

In this passage of scripture we see an age-old truth conveyed – love God and follow His ways and you will have good success in all you do. Lifted right out of the books of Moses, it spoke to what constituted being a man. Three thousand years later – it still speaks – and still needs a father to transmit it to his son.
