What If Jesus Had Not Come?
We live in a post-modern world where we have exposure to all of history before us. Not only is our past history available but also the history of other nations and cultures. We have a panoramic view of man’s habitation on this planet and yet, is there one generation who can attest to having achieved peace on earth?
Living a life of peace and prosperity may be attainable if you live on an island, but when two or more people come together the struggle begins. Disagreements turn into hostilities; anger mounts; jealousy, resentment, lying and back-bitting, every evil work; conflict is inevitable and if left unchecked usually turns violent. Corporate peace seems unattainable.
Yet, the scripture speaks of a "wonderful counselor" who will bring "peace on earth". While the world has yet to embrace the Savior, those who do have found that indeed when He comes, He brings peace:
A David Psalm Thank you! Everything in me says "Thank you!" Angels listen as I sing my thanks. I kneel in worship facing your holy temple and say it again: "Thank you!" Thank you for your love, thank you for your faithfulness; Most holy is your name, most holy is your Word. The moment I called out, you stepped in; you made my life large with strength. Psalm 138:3 (MSG)
While the Psalmist speaks of the strength that God gives, the one that came later through the line of David came with the power to not only give strength, but give new life:
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:26-27 (KJV)
When Jesus comes into our life, that is what He brings, wisdom, understanding, peace, courage. God provided many things since the creation of man for us to live well, but it was not until Jesus came and paid the redemptive price for our sins that we were able to receive the total package, for here and for-ever.
