Not Looking Back!

As we continue in this Advent season we want to remember wha advent means:

".observation in some Christian churches four Sundays before the coming of the Christ child, usually observed with prayer and fasting; also refers to the Second Coming of Christ

Whatever your observation before or during the Christmas season, there is a Word from Jesus Himself that He is coming again!

Luke the seventeenth chapter refers to one event that we should all take note of:

Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! If you grasp and cling to life on your terms, you’ll lose it, but if you let that life go, you’ll get life on God’s terms. Luke 17:32 (MSG)

As Jesus was referring to the coming destruction of Jerusalem, He reminded those listening, of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot was given specific instructions, which he passed on to his family as the angel of the Lord led them out of Sodom that they were not to look back. Lot’s wife looked back resulting in her becoming a pillar of salt.

While we may never in our lifetime face this kind of desolation; it is a good thing to keep looking and moving forward, and NOT look back. We cannot change the past, no matter how hard we try. The best we can do is to follow God’s leading and trust Him to carry us into a blessed future. Lamenting over past mistakes, fretting over loses; pining over regret – not only are futile, they will weigh us down with unnecessary weights that will negatively affect our health and well-being.

As the writer of Hebrews reminded us of an Old Testament command:

Those earlier ones never did get to the place of rest because they were disobedient. God keeps renewing the promise and setting the date as today, just as he did in David’s psalm, centuries later than the original invitation:

Today, please listen,
don’t turn a deaf ear . . .

^8-11 And so this is still a live promise. Hebrews 4:7-8 (MSG)
