Yes, We Are Free, But…?
One of the greatest benefits of our salvation is that Christ has made us free! When we were born into this world we were given the propensity to have free will. We are given the ability to choose how we think and what we do. Or, are we? What ends up happening is that the majority of us become beholden to doctrines, and mores that hold us captive. We are either born in or assimilate to a particular group that thinks this way or that, and we want to stay connected, so we willingly follow the dictates of that group. We are afraid of thinking outside the parameters of the group. Our dress, our attitudes, our behavior reflects the group that we identify with. So, then are we really free?
The Apostle Paul speaks of freedom to the Corinthian church:
12 Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.! Corinthians 6:12 (MSG)
Paul is in this chapter trying to show these Gentile believers who highly regarded for their great intellect that we can think we are free to do whatever we please, but in the final analysis we can even become a slave to that very liberty!
Freedom, as we understood it in this country, at the onset, is the ability to do what you want as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of someone else. Current culture is attempting to redefine it to apply to a freedom for those who have the attention of the marketplace. Anyone who wants to express their freedom outside of popular culture is in violation., or as they say – is hostile to the dominant thought of the day.
Make no mistake about it, this kind of thinking is going somewhere – and it’s not toward greater liberty and justice for all.
Beloved, God exposes the hearts of men. What sounds good, may not necessarily be good. Jesus said:
"You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you’ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren’t willing to receive from me the life you say you want. John 5:39-40 (MSG)
I pray you "pause and think about this".
Maria
