What We See When We Wake Up!
Many of us go through life looking at life through rose colored glasses. Others don’t have any glasses of any kind, they walk blindly through life, hoping everything works out alright. Yet, even the more astute can only see so much of what is going on, because it takes a spiritual revelation to be able to see many things:
8 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."Luke 9:28-33 (NIV)
In the above scripture we see Jesus taking three of his disciples up on top of a mountain to pray. Jesus knew His time was fast approaching when real persecution was going to come upon Him. No doubt He wanted His disciples to experience something they would never forget. The passage notes that the disciples were sleepy and they at first did not recognize the transformation that had taken place with Jesus, or the men standing with Him. The scripture declares that "when they became fully awake" – they were then able to see not only the glory that Jesus had transfigured into, but also they saw the two men standing alongside of Him. Yet, there was something even more significant about what they saw, they were able to see that these two men were Moses and Elijah. How could this be when both Moses and Elijah had both long since left the earth. Now, speculation concerning this event has taken many forms – and as we know both Moses and Elijah were not buried by men – Moses dying on the mountaintop, and God buried him, and Elijah being taken up into heaven. Thus, we can only assume that on this particular mountaintop, after the disciples were "fully awake" that God pulled back a veil, revealing something going on in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Reflecting on this, I believe that we too have the potential to not only see the glory of God and HIs Son, the Christ; but we also can have glimpses of what is going on in the heavenly realm, if God so desires. This can happen when we’re fully awake! The question that remains for all of us however is:
O wake up, sleepyhead. How long will you lie there? When will you wake up and get out of bed? Proverbs has 6:9 (The Passion Translation)
