Do You Know Him?
Even if wisdom does not come easily, it is something that we can ask for according to the book of James. Yet, we find in Luke an interesting passage of scripture;
Later his disciples came to Jesus and asked him privately what deeper meaning was found in this parable. 10 He said, "You have been given a teachable heart to perceive the secret, hidden mysteries of God’s kingdom realm. But to those who don’t have a listening heart, my words are merely stories. Even though they have eyes, they are blind to the true meaning of what I say, and even though they listen, they won’t receive full revelation. Luke 8:9-10 (TPT)
Luke captured the essence of a real student – to have a "teachable heart". For a teachable heart opens the doors to learning hidden mysteries. While we may have things right in front of us, their properties are often hidden to the naked eye. Jesus used parables or stories with hidden meaning to teach His disciples. He let them know in this passage of scripture that many who came out to listen to what He had to say did not really possess a listening heart. Their eyes were also blind to what was really being said, mainly because they were set in the ways of their thinking and couldn’t leave room for new teaching.
It is like that today. We are so sure we know the ways of God that we close ourselves off from there being any possibility that God might do a new thing! For some it is because we grew up in churches that emphasized, "Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever"
Then he spoke to Simon about the woman still weeping at his feet. "Don’t you see this woman kneeling here? She is doing for me what you didn’t bother to do. When I entered your home as your guest, you didn’t think about offering me water to wash the dust off my feet. Yet she came into your home and washed my feet with her many tears and then dried my feet with her hair. Luke 7:44 (TPT)
Imagine Jesus allowing a harlot to come before Him and wash his feet with her tears and dry them with her hair? Imagine the Holy One of Israel forgiving a woman caught in the very act of adultery, when it was a crime punishable by death! Imagine Jesus calling a cheating, thieving tax collector to walk with Him? Imagine Jesus calling out Saul on the Damascus Road and challenging Him to see Him, even while His eyes were going blind?
Do you really know this Jesus? He is still using some very strange people!
