Be Grateful!
I remember the days the choir sang this song, "Be Grateful" by Walter Hawkins:
(Be Grateful)
(Be Grateful)
God has not promised me sunshine
That’s not the way it’s going to be
But a little rain (A little rain)
Mixed with God’s sunshine
A little pain (A little pain)
Makes me appreciate the good times
(Be Grateful) Grateful
(Be Grateful) Grateful
God desires to feel your longing
Every pain that you feel
He feels them just like you (Just like you)
But he can’t afford to let you feel only good (Only good)
Then you can appreciate the good times
(Be Grateful) Grateful
(Be Grateful) Be Grateful
Because there’s someone else who’s worse off than
Be Grateful (Be Grateful)
Because there’s someone else who’d love to be in your shoes..
While the above is just a portion of this infamous song (at least in some circles it was) – it spells out the message clearly – we need to be grateful. While everyone of us would like every day to be a day of sunshine and roses, God never promised that. While everyone of us would like to have all the desires of our heart, if we look around, we see there are scores of people who are worst off than we are and would love to have even af fraction of what we have.
It’s all about perspective. What is the lens that you are looking through? What drives your heart – envy or gratitude; resentment or thanksgiving? Never was this proverb more true, than it is today:
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)
And another proverb tases you down the same road:
So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life. 4:23 (TPT)
