Winter – A Due Season!

As I look out of my window, the sun is shining so brightly that it seems to saying, “come out and play!” When I look at the snow heaped out on the lawn, I know that not only is it winter, but this week-end there are frigid temperatures as well.

One of the good things about living in the Midwest is that you know that eventually you will see four seasons. They may not come exactly like they are supposed to, but they will come. Scripture reminds us that:

“As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.”Genesis 8:22 (NLT)

No matter what the climatologists tell us, we can be sure that there will be four seasons until Jesus returns again.

When I think of that, I think that all God’s promises are like that. They may not come when we want them, but they come in due season. Only God knows when winter should come, and only God knows when our winter should come, (thankfully He knows when our seasons should come as well). There is value in the winter season, it helps to regulate the earth’s surface, and when it melts it refreshes reservoirs and other water systems and goes deep into the ground to prepare the ground for the next planting season.

Winter does this for us as well. We become balanced with the winter season, even as it slows us down, it regulates our internal system, giving us the opportunity to assess things in our lives. Planting and harvest are important, but so is the ground lying dormant, getting nourished for the next planting season. When we are in the winter of our lives we are also preparing for our next planting, our next due season!

Be encouraged, this year’s groundhog predicted only six more weeks of winter on this past Tuesday. We can do this, for we know that after winter, we are that much closer to our due season!
