This week we have been talking about confidence. We are ending this week with one of my favorite scriptures:
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
I want to focus on the word, ‘being’. In the dictionary one of the many definitions of this word is:
gerund or present participle: being
- 1. used with a present participle to form continuous tenses
And this is where this definition fits in for me. When the scripture says “being confident of this very thing” – then it clearly states for me this is a continuous action. It doesn’t stop; it never ends. From now until glory, I will “be confident” that “he that hath begun a good work in (me) – will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”.
I’m so convinced of this not only because it is a promise, but it has thus far been an actuality in my life. While so many times I wondered whether what I was going through in the midst of the drama would ever be over – God takes the drama to a glorious end if we wait on Him. He will finish what He starts in our life.
Therefore, I am encouraged. In the midst of pandemic, in the midst of a divided nation, in the midst of an uncertain future – on the day of another birthday – I am “being confident” – God’s got it, and that’s enough for me!
