While Obeying His Father…
One of the reasons why we should instill obedience in our children is that in doing so they learn how to obey God. A child that learns to obey without questioning, finds it easier to trust the God who usually does not give explanation prior to receiving a commitment from us.
Saul was a young man who seemed to be willing to obey his father. In 1 Samuel 9 and 10, the story is told of Saul’s father instructing him to go and search for some donkeys that were lost. His search proving to be futile, Saul still did not want to return home without doing all that he could. He made a decision to go and see the seer in hopes of getting information as to how to find the donkeys. Samuel was that seer. What a surprise Saul received when he learned that the donkeys had been found, but also that he was going to be anointed as the first king of Israel!
Samuel knew that Saul needed a sign to believe the words that he spoke to him, and so he gave this message:
5 After that you shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is.And it will happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 1 Samuel 10:(NKJV)
Samuel gave a pretty descriptive scenario to let Saul know that the words he had been spoken to him were true. But even more was the action that would follow Saul’s journey – “the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man”. What a promise! And of course that is exactly what happened.
What about us? What if we obey the things that we are told to do? Maybe beginning with our parents, too late? Maybe then, with the authority figures over us. Or, what if we went before God every day and waited for His instructions and then choose to OBEY Him and go about our regular day. What if by just going through simple acts of obedience, we find we are turned Into another person? Maybe a royal priesthood, a holy nation?
