Little Did He Know…

All the characters in the Bible are there for purpose – their life experiences bringing something to us that speaks to our humanity. Yet, one of the most notable of all characters is David – the little shepherd boy.

While David was tending his father’s sheep on the back side of a mountain, singing songs to God, did he dream he would one day ascend into the pages of scripture as a notable king? We’ll never know what his personal dreams were, but we have a multitude of Psalms that tell us of the struggles he had as he waited on God to give him that throne. With transparency we see the struggles, the fear, the anguish, the pain that David went through year after year all because God had commissioned him to be king!

Have you ever wondered if the painful circumstances you have encountered are perhaps fashioning you for greatness? Have you ever analyzed your situation and determined that there must be purpose greater than you can see right now? Have you ever asked God, why me? Well, most of us do have those concerns at one time or another in our life. One answer we know that He will he give us, is the melody that He gave to David:

The Eternal is my shepherd, He cares for me always.
² He provides me rest in rich, green fields
    beside streams of refreshing water.
    He soothes my fears;
³ He makes me whole again,
    steering me off worn, hard paths
    to roads where truth and righteousness echo His name.

⁴ Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness,
    I am not overcome by fear.
Because You are with me in those dark moments,
    near with Your protection and guidance,
    I am comforted.

⁵ You spread out a table before me,
    provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies;
You care for all my needs, anointing my head with soothing, fragrantoil,
    filling my cup again and again with Your grace.
⁶ Certainly Your faithful protection and loving provision will pursue me
    where I go, always, everywhere.
I will always be with the Eternal,
    in Your house forever. Psalm 23 (The Voice
