While We’re Relaxing in the Sun!

There is no doubt that we have had some very lovely days so far as spring slides into summer. The sun has been shining over balmy days, the grass is so green, the flowers are beautiful – what more can we ask? Everywhere I hear of people going on trips thoughts of the pandemic have vanished. It’s back to business as usual, it’s summertime and the living is easy.

Wait a minute though. A couple of years ago (2019) we went through a summer where the worst thing we thought could happen was #45 in the White House – what could be worst than that? As 2019 faded into 2020 we found out that there are a lot worst things than a political opponent. It caught us off guard – we weren’t ready for what was to come upon us. Many panicked and lived in fear, shut up in their houses, afraid to see family and friends – the concern was widespread, “what can I do to save my life”? All of a sudden what seemed most important was stockpiling on toilet paper and disinfectant!

Well there is one in creation that does not wast their summers. Every summer they diligently work; they get together in teams, trying to figure the best way to prepare for winter:

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones.
    Learn from their ways and become wise!
⁷ Though they have no prince
    or governor or ruler to make them work,
⁸ they labor hard all summer,
    gathering food for the winter.
⁹ But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep?
    When will you wake up? Proverbs 6:6-9 (NLT)

Oh, if only we could learn from the ants. We should know that no matter what else happens, winter is sure to come. There may not be another covid crisis, or they may be something even worst that will come upon the earth. Whatever comes, we don’t ever need to be blindsided again. While we may not be able to predict our fate, we can be like the ant and ‘become wise”, we need to wake up and pray; stop fighting over people you don’t like, holding hostility to those who adhere to a different viewpoint. We need to spend our summer, gathering food for our spirits, nourishing our souls. Then, come what may- we will be ready to stand!
