Talking About Sex!

Sex is not a topic that we typically talk about on Heartlife Lifelines, though it is extensively talked about in the marriage ministry. The reason simply is we had to make a decision as to what things we would bring to a daily forum. However, when I ran across this scripture – it spoke too plainly not to release it:

There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, “The two become one.” Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever—the kind of sex that can never “become one.” There is a sense in which sexual sins are different from all others. In sexual sin we violate the sacredness of our own bodies, these bodies that were made for God-given and God-modeled love, for “becoming one” with another. Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body.1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (MSG)

Never have I seen a clearer argument for chastity until marriage. Sex is not just physical contact between two people – it is so much more than that. It is a coming together of two to become one -that is not something that anyone should take lightly. Do you want to become “one” with just anybody? And because physical intimacy is a symbol of the spiritual intimacy that we obtain with the Trinity – if we examine these verses it is clear that entering into union with them is no trivial matter. The price that Jesus paid for that intimacy requires more than just a casual acquaintance. We need to wholeheartedly and without reservation bring ourselves to Him as our first and foremost love, recognizing that in so doing we not only become one with Him, we also belong to Him. We become the breath of God. Unless we recognize the significance of this we will play the harlot with God, as many are doing today with their sexual relationships.

Admittedly, this is not something that is emphasized in today’s culture. Yet, for the benefit of all who will listen, isn’t it time we made it a part of our conversation?
