There are things in our life that we would like to forget. One of them in my life is that I sometimes suffered from a “foot in mouth” disease. I would pick the most inappropriate times to speak my mind. It landed me in more than one difficult situation. It took years, but I finally learned something that teachers have to learn early in their career: there is no person that you cannot say something good about. If you can master starting with the good, sometimes the not so good is palpable.

Yes, good advice usually doesn’t even make it into the cranial cavity if it is not presented properly. Even then, if it is not asked for, it still may fly over the head.
Our contemporary society seems bent on trying to insult everyone who doesn’t agree with them. This is not just young people who have yet to learn that we often judged. by the judgment we mete to others. Even older people seem to take delight in running down the character flaws in other people.
I wish I could say I have a remedy for this. However, one thing that comes to mind, albeit it may be a slow solution, is to model the kind of behavior that Solomon suggests, let’s try to say the right thing at the right time to the right people – it could make a world of difference.
