Exercise Rest, It’s Going to Get Busy!

This week October will end its’ time for 2020. Why that means is that November and December seem to zoom by, bringing us quickly into the new year. The best thing we can do to prepare ourselves for that is to meditate on the following verse:

There still exists, therefore, a full and complete rest for the people of God. And he who experiences his real rest is resting from his own work as fully as God from his. Hebrews 4:9-10

In looking at why God chose a sabbath rest after He made all of creation, it was said in one my reference Bibles that it was not because He was tired and needed to just take off a day. Rather, it was because His creation was complete, He had finished the work He began.

So it is with us when we take a sabbath rest – we recognize that Jesus paid it all, He completed it all, and hence are laid up exceeding great and precious promises that we can depend upon. Try as we might there are some things that we will never be able to do, for they need the power of the Holy Spirit. Our biggest work is learning how to “labor” to enter into God’s rest; knowing that it is He that has made us, and now we ourselves.

Does that mean we are sit under a fig tree and do no work from here through eternity? Not at all! We are God’s ambassadors and servants on this planet, each assigned with specific work. In fact the Scripture says:

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)

We are going to work and do excellent work, but the energy supply comes from the power at work in us – the Holy Spirit. We are given directions, He helps us to fulfill them. When we don’t get direction, it is time to sit down and pray for the direction or for those projects that we think we have been given either to be put on hold, or cancelled, because He has a better plan.

No, we won’t sit on the veranda and drink lemonade all our days, but the frustration, the anxiety, the tension should not be by-products of our scheduled program – not if we are looking to God to make the schedule!
