Mother Did You Know?

One of my all-time favorite songs for the Christmas season is “Mary Did You Know” by Mark Lowry and Steve Green. It speaks to me of the heart of God that would entrust His plan for all creation into the hands of a simple maiden whose only credentials was a heart and life yielded to Him.

I can’t help but remember the first time I held my first child – the wonder of how I could have had a part in creating something so beautiful was beyond my comprehension. And it didn’t change with the entry of child # 2 or 3 or 4, or even down to number 8! Each child was welcomed into my enlarged heart and viewed as a very special gift from God. I admit that I had no knowledge of what talents they possessed, what aspirations they would reach for, what challenges they would face – and I’m grateful that I didn’t – it would have been too much for me – far more than I could bear.So when I hear the words of this song I love so much, I can share on a small scale at least a little as to what must have been going on in Mary’s heart that eventful day when God became man in the form of a little baby:

Mary did you know that your baby boy would some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy would give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when your kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.

Oh Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am

Did Mary realize the enormity of the assignment she had been given? How could she? How can any of us even begin to fathom the majesty of His plans toward us? And yet that young maiden so surrendered her life to God that she was able to say to her cousin Elisabeth:

46-55 Then Mary said, “My heart is overflowing with praise of my Lord, my soul is full of joy in God my Saviour. For he has deigned to notice me, his humble servant and, after this, all the people ho ever shall be will call me the happiest of women! The one who can do all things has done great things for me—oh, holy is his Name! Truly, his mercy rests on those who fear him in every generation. Luke 1:46-55 (Phillips Translation)

And do you know, your assignment, your “baby” is no less important to God?

Something to think about…

Maria

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs too. I just listened to about 4-5 different versions of it a day or two ago.

PRAISE GOD that Mary submitted to God’s will and chose LIFE for her “unplanned pregnancy” (Jesus Christ was indeed planned by God but a surprise and a miracle for Mary). Today Mary is honored, lauded and called “blessed among women” because she was a willing vessel. Life what a beautiful CHOICE!! Thanks Maria!
