A Word About a Queen..

I was going to write about another topic, but hearing the news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth, my mind took a different turn. I watched every episode of the Crown. While I always acknowledge the entry of Hollywood into every motion picture made, nonetheless, I believe much of who Queen Elizabeth was as a person shone through this epic production.

Rulers are not priests. Even if they were, they are subject to like passions like the rest of us. Hence I don’t any ruler on a pedestal, expecting them to be infallible. However, over the seventy years she ruled England, her country and the world went through revolutionary changes. With every advent of change she remained her composure, her humility, and I believe displayed a great deal of wisdom. In fact, this scripture came to mind when I thought about her:

“Counsel is mine and sound wisdom;
I am understanding, power and strength are mine.
“By me kings reign
And rulers decide and decree justice.
“By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge and govern rightly. Proverbs 8:14-15 (AMP)

This is not to say that Queen Elizabeth was not without error. I am sure that she made plenty, just like we all do. Yet, some credit has to be given to the honor she gave to who she said was her savior:

‘Pray for me … that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.’ – words from her first Christmas broadcast in 1952. In 1985 referring to the story of the Good Samaritan she spoke these words: “the story ‘reminds us of our duty to our neighbour. We should try to follow Christ’s clear instruction at the end of that story: “Go and do thou likewise”.

There are many more recorded words that spoke of her faith, and no doubt countless decisions she had to make were based on her faith. Our acknowledgement is not to put Queen Elizabeth in reverence, but simply to say many of her words attest to her faith in God and in Christianity, and could that be one reason that she lived such a long and healthy life amidst the great responsibilities she carried?

One thing is sure, her leadership will be recognized in the annals of history and hopefully as the records are revealed, her faith will be passed down in the lineage of her family and the people of England.
