After the Resurrection!

Those of us who recognized this past week-end as being the greatest celebration on earth – when Jesus rose from the dead and appeared unto His disciples, just as He said He would need to stop and consider our next steps. With this prophecy coming to past, it is certain that the remaining prophecies concerning our Lord will also come to pass, He will come again and take His bride (His church) into a place prepared for them.

So, after the Resurrection, and Christ appearing to them, they were finally beginning to get the things He had been telling them, but what was their action:

1Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee.a This is how it happened. 2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.

3Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. John 21:1-3 (NLT)

Even though Jesus had appeared to them to make Himself known in John 20:19-29, it still didn’t register to them that their job was still to be fishers of men, not fisherman going into the waters for fish. This is significant because even with the Resurrection it still didn’t register what their primary function was to be, they resorted to that which was familiar. However, as we see in the third verse of Chp 21, they caught nothing all night. Their going fishing in the waters was futile.

What does this mean for us today? We celebrated Resurrection Sunday, possibly even did some spiritual preparation work during Holy Week and on Good Friday. Now we are past the celebration, what are we going to do? Are we going back fishing, i.e. returning to our standard operating procedure of living, doing what we think is best, following the dictates of this world? Or, are we going to wait for further instructions from our Lord? Are we going to seek His face and listen for our marching orders. While that will probably not mean quitting your job, it might mean functioning differently on your job, not engaging in the activities of the crowd, but living out what we say we believed on this past Sunday. For what we testified to in acknowledging Jesus as the risen Savior is to have that same resurrection power living in us a a believer, living a new life based upon the Bible we say we believe in – even if that means, especially if that means, not going with the ways of the world.
