Don’t Forget to Get a Check-In!

This time of year I notice that many people who suffer from mental illness are having a rough time. It seems to begin in the fall, when the days are not sunny, and the weather changes. As the holidays approach it intensifies. And as the long dreary days of winter roll on, the spirit of those with mental illness begins to cry out for help.

People with mental illness are not the only ones who are affected by the dark days of winter, in fact, studies show that people of all ages and all demographics can be affected by climate changes. Thus, it behooves all of us to do what the Psalmist suggests:

Examine me, O Lord, and try me; Test my heart and my mind. Psalm 26:2 (AMP)

While the Psalmist asked the Lord to test their heart and mind, most of us need to check in with someone we trust as well. Friends and relatives alike may notice changes in behavior when certain seasons occur. And while they may love us, we may not feel comfortable confiding in them. Fortunately there are plenty of professionals available to engage so that we can do a double check-in, with the Lord and with someone who can help us sort out the complexities of this life.

Our Father wants us to be healthy inside and out; so does our family. One thing I have noticed over my many years on this earth is true:

You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

Peace is our inner barometer to let us know that all is well. When our peace is affected, it’s like the flashing lights on our car’s panel, it’s time to get a check-in!

Maria
